Hard Problems, Smart Engineering

A wrapped high-bandwidth hydraulic valve project, new ecosystem partnerships with TerraScale and Greentown Labs, a straight answer on who owns the IP, and where to find our engineers this fall.

This month we're closing out an ARPA-E program, wrapping a hydraulic valve project, and building our ecosystem further. Milestones like these are why we do this work. Read on, and if any of it connects to yours, we'd love to hear from you.

High-Bandwidth Hydraulic Valve: Twenty Years in a Corner of Czero Not Everyone Knows Exists

We're wrapping up a high-bandwidth hydraulic valve project this month, and it's a good excuse to talk about a corner of Czero not everyone knows exists.

High-bandwidth hydraulics isn't a new page in Czero's story. It's one of the oldest. Our engineers have been designing high-speed solenoids, actuators, and fuel injectors, the kind of components where electromagnetic design, fluid dynamics, and precision mechanics all have to work at hundreds, if not thousands, of cycles per second, for many years. That experience never left the building. High-bandwidth hydraulics has quietly stayed in our wheelhouse for two decades as we continue to do work in this space.

Projects like this one also show off something else we've built: our sister company, Quixik Machining and Fabrication, LLC., spearheads the manufacturing side. Same team overseeing design and fabrication means no translation loss between the drawings and the parts. We design it, Quixik builds it, and we test it, all under one entity.

Collaboration is in our DNA: Czero partners with startups, incubators, and accelerators including REACH Energy Accelerator, Activate, Third Derivative, the Grantham Foundation, TerraScale, and Greentown Labs

Collaboration Is In Our DNA

We partner with startups, incubators, and accelerators, from REACH Energy Accelerator and Activate to Third Derivative and the Grantham Foundation, and we're proud to now count TerraScale and Greentown Labs among them.

TerraScale

Excited for the launch of TerraScale, and proud to share that Czero is part of the journey as an ecosystem partner. We're looking forward to collaborating, making new connections, and helping more climate and energy startups move from idea to impact. Congratulations to the TerraScale team on the launch. We're excited for what's ahead!

Greentown Labs

Community, connection, and good work with good people: that's what Greentown Labs brings, and we're proud to become a catalyst partner with them. From packed summits to lively community events, it's a network of builders pushing hardtech forward, and we're glad to be part of it.

Founder Q&A: Czero assigns rights to inventions and IP developed on your product to you. You bring domain expertise and vision; Czero brings rigorous execution, 20+ years average experience, and 450+ projects.

Founder Q&A · Intellectual Property

"Who Owns the Patent on What We Build Together?"

At Czero, the answer is simple: Czero assigns rights to inventions and IP developed on your product to you.

The division of labor is straightforward. You bring the domain expertise and the vision for what needs to exist. We bring rigorous engineering execution: capacity that scales quickly as programs demand, and depth from a team averaging 20+ years of experience across 450+ completed projects. You own the what and the why. Our rigor de-risks the how.

Czero and Quixik under one roof: Czero designs, Quixik builds, Czero tests. Same team, start to finish.

Working With Czero

Is Your Next Project a Fit for Czero?

Four ways technical teams typically bring us in:

Concept to Prototype
You have a promising idea but need system design, integration support, and a clear path to a reliable demo.
Subsystem Integration
We make multiple vendors and technologies work together, analyzing the design, selecting the hardware, and adding the controls that tie everything into a coherent system.
Design Acceleration
Our senior engineers have been doing this for years, with scars on their backs from hard lessons learned, and land the plane under tight deadlines.
Targeted Workscopes
Need to answer a specific question to unblock a decision? We handle focused studies like FEA, CFD, Techno-Economic Analyses (TEA), and more.

Our engagement flexes from daily collaboration to independent milestone delivery. And in almost all cases, the IP we develop is assigned to you.

Wherever the Technology Is, We're There

Three stops across the energy landscape this month, from proven platforms to what's just getting started.

Established tech, new tools: UW-Madison Engine Research Center Symposium

Guy joined the ERC's 2026 Symposium, "IC Engines and Power Generation: Technology, Simulation, and AI," at his alma mater, the UW-Madison campus. It's a reminder that even mature technology platforms are being reshaped by better modeling and AI-driven simulation, and a natural fit for Czero's engine and combustion work, including our ARPA-E AMPLIFY program alongside UW-Madison.

Scaling now: LDES National Consortium Annual Workshop

Guy spent two days in Salt Lake City at the LDES National Consortium's Annual Workshop, connecting with partners across the long-duration storage ecosystem as the technology moves from pilot projects to deployment at scale. It's a space closely aligned with the systems-integration and controls work Czero brings to energy storage programs. As a consortium member, we have worked on multiple LDES projects: compressed air energy storage, thermal, thermochemical, redox reaction, gravity, H2, and more.

Emerging frontier: Colorado Fusion Week

Lindsay attended the inaugural Colorado Fusion Week, hosted by Colorado Cleantech at the Beck Venture Center at Colorado School of Mines, where Colorado's fusion companies laid out what they're building and why the state is positioned to host the industry as it commercializes. Czero works squarely on a layer fusion needs: multiphysics modeling, CFD/FEA, controls, and more.
