MATLAB/SIMULINK Dynamic Modeling for System and Component Level Simulation
Czero can help you model your system or product. We have engineers who have been building and simulating individual components and complex systems using the MATLAB/Simulink/Simscape suite of tools from MATHWORKS. Modeling systems accurately and efficiently using MATHWORKs tools is what we do. System and component models are extremely useful for:

We have many projects that require tools beyond what is typically available in commercial software, so we develop our own. While we could purchase software to meet individual necessities – to model a chemical process, to create a solid body model, or to generate a controller model – we have found that often the software packages do not play well together when developing full system models. Therefore, we develop our own tools to perform these highly complex integrations of different physical systems into one overall model. In one specific example, Czero has developed a set of custom blocks in MATLAB/Simulink to support projects that require tracking of multiple fluid species, with phase changes and chemical kinetics. Because they were built from the ground up, they are customizable for just about any combination of species and ranges of pressure and temperature. Czero can leverage this library of tools for any project, reducing cost and development time, while customizing them for a client’s specific needs. Example Projects
Solenoid Control Valve
Czero uses MATLAB/Simulink for solenoid control valve design for custom hydraulic applications. The control valve model is typically built using information from both CFD modeling of the valve and magnetic modeling of the solenoid. This detailed modeling is used to build a physically accurate model of the control valve which can include:
- Current rise time in the solenoid coil,
- Changing magnetic forces with current and armature gap,
- Fluid flow forces on the control valve,
- Bounce and stiction on valve hard stop
These models can be stand alone for detailed control valve design and development or used as part of a larger system model where the control valve motion is critical for predicting system performance.
Sub-ambient Battery Cooling for Electric Vehicles (EV)
Czero uses MATLAB/Simscape tools for design and evaluation of EV battery cooling systems. The vapor compression circuit is typically built using SIMSCAPE Fluids toolbox. The major components of the system include:
- Evaporator/Chiller
- Compressor
- Condensor
- Expansion valve
These components can be customized to simulate actual hardware if component performance data is available or can be parameterized for predicting the optimal sizing for desired system performance. The system model can be used to determine the best refrigerant to use for the operating conditions as well as sizing the evaporator/chiller needed to keep the battery at optimal temperatures during operation, the compressor flow rate needed to meet cooling loads and the condenser layout and air flow needed to reject the heat load at the worst case ambient conditions. Often times these Simscape models are part of a larger EV simulation where vehicle drive cycles are used to determine the control algorithms for the EV battery cooling during different driving conditions.
